Business Coaching That Works: A Guide for Manchester Leaders

Most business owners who contact me have already tried to fix the business. A new CRM, a restructure, a sales push, another hire. Some of it helps. Much of it fades within a quarter. The cause is usually simple. A business can only grow as far as the person leading it.

Business Coaching Manchester | Future You

I am an ILM Level 5 qualified coach with nearly 20 years in business and commercial leadership, working with Managing Directors, senior leaders and scaling founders across Manchester and the North West. I develop the person and the business at the same time, because business success starts with the people behind it.

What is business coaching?

Business coaching is a confidential, structured partnership that helps leaders think clearly, make better decisions and grow their organisation. It deals with live issues: the senior hire you keep putting off, the pipeline that goes quiet every August, the promotion that doubled your team and your workload with it. You should leave every session with a clearer view of the problem and a specific next step.

Why so much business coaching falls short Coaching usually disappoints for one of three reasons. It focuses on the business alone, handing an overstretched leader a plan they have no headspace to deliver. It focuses on the person alone, so sessions feel useful while revenue stays flat. Or it is delivered by someone without the right grounding.

Coaching in the UK is unregulated, so anyone can call themselves a business coach. Check two things.

A recognised qualification. Accredited training from a body such as the ILM, EMCC, ICF or the Association for Coaching means your coach works to professional standards and proven methods.

Real commercial experience. A coach who has carried a target and led teams can challenge you on pipeline, pricing and performance with authority.

I bring both: an ILM Level 5 in Coaching and Mentoring, and nearly 20 years of commercial leadership. My work follows my own proprietary coaching and sales methodologies, built from that experience and refined with real clients.

My approach: the person and the business together

Future You combines executive coaching, commercial expertise and behavioural insight. Coaching builds clarity and confidence. Commercial expertise keeps the work tied to revenue, margin and pipeline. DISC profiling shows how you and your team communicate and decide, and many frustrations turn out to be differences in style that nobody has named.

Take a founder with 25 staff whose sales still depend on them. Together, we clarify the role they need to play, build a sales structure that runs without them, use DISC to hand over responsibility effectively, and track the effect on revenue and on their time.

What results look like

Every engagement starts with agreed personal and commercial measures. The pace depends on your starting point, but these are the milestones I work towards.

First 90 days: clear priorities, stalled decisions made, and a shared language across your leadership team.

Six months: a sales process that needs less of your input, managers deciding more without you, and more of your week spent on strategy.

Twelve months: a business that depends less on you, with revenue, margin and team performance moving against the measures set at the start.

5 practical tips for business coaching that works

1. Define success in personal and commercial terms

Write down one personal and one business outcome for the next six months, such as "I spend two days a week on strategy" and "Revenue grows 20% with less reliance on my own selling". If you cannot write it down, you cannot measure it.

2. Audit where your time goes

For one week, log your time in half-hour blocks and mark each as "only I can do this", "someone else could do this" or "this does not need doing". Most founders are surprised by how full the last two columns are. Protect one freed-up hour a week for thinking.

3. Learn your behavioural style, and your team's

A DISC profile for you and your leadership team creates a shared language that removes friction from meetings, feedback and handovers.

4. Treat sales as a leadership discipline

If revenue depends on you, the business has a ceiling. Review the pipeline weekly with three questions: what has moved, what has stalled, and what happens next. If you lack senior sales capacity, fractional sales leadership provides it without a full-time hire.

5. Measure progress on both sides

Each quarter, track personal measures, such as time spent on strategic work, alongside revenue, margin, retention and team performance. When both move together, the coaching is working.

Signs you are ready for business coaching

  • You have stepped into a bigger role and need to lead at a different level.

  • Your business has grown and you have become the bottleneck.

  • Sales still depend heavily on you.

  • You are navigating a restructure, merger, new market or planned exit.

  • You want a confidential sounding board with commercial credibility.

Frequently asked questions about business coaching Do you offer business coaching in Manchester?

Yes. Future You works with leaders, founders and business owners across Manchester and the North West.

What qualifications should a business coach have?

Coaching in the UK is unregulated, so look for a recognised qualification from a respected professional body, combined with real commercial experience.

How long does business coaching take to work?

Most clients notice sharper thinking within the first few sessions. Lasting commercial change usually builds over six to twelve months.

Is business coaching worth the investment?

It is when it is tied to clear outcomes. Agreeing measures at the start makes the return visible in revenue, retention and the value of the business.

What is the difference between executive coaching and business coaching?

Executive coaching centres on the individual leader. Business coaching centres on the performance of the organisation. Future You combines the two, because each depends on the other.
